Angelika Platen is one of the most prolific photographers in Germany. She is considered a master of the intimate artist portrait. In her new series of works, she is dedicated exclusively to the current female artist scene, which she photographs in studios and galleries. Among the portrayed are artists of almost all nations: Sonja Alhäuser, Monica Bonvicini, Cecilia Edefalk, Nan Goldin, Katharina Grosse, Jitka Hanzlova, Susan Hefuna, Maki Na Kamura, Agnieszka Polska, Bettina Rheims, Karin Sander, SEO, Pola Sieverding, Miriam Vlaming and many more.
For about four decades, she photographed exclusively in black and white. For this series she takes today's artistic female avant-garde in colour. To emphasize their formal and motivic diversity, this move appears Angelika Platen as a logical consequence of the gradually more and more visible women in the art business.
Whether coloured or black-and-white: the leitmotiv of this photographic portraiture is the congruence of person and work, but also the playful relationship of the artists to their chosen environment. At that time, when Angelika Platen began her work with Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol, the art world was still primary male-dominated. The Gallery Michael Schultz makes the successful catching-up process visible with ineffably female.
